Not something where you have to save the printable document as PDF then run a different app to print it. I want something that will work for any document that AirPrint can print now. It's an interesting question whether more flexible Airprint printing is better done from the client (ipad) end or the server end.

Many years ago Mac OS 9 had support for manual duplexing, and Windows has good support now, but with OS X it takes several clicks through menus in the print dialog box to force even or odd page printing, and when you have just printed even pages you still have to go through all the same steps to print odd pages. But there is no way to include manual duplexing in a profile. Printing from my Mac I can create any number of named print profiles with settings such as grayscale or draft, and typically the printer defaults to the last-used profile. (I can choose either black or colour each time I copy, and I can set a mode that disables colour copying.) Nor are there any similar settings in the iPad control panel. I can't find any setting on my printer's control panel that would let me set a default print quality of draft or grayscale. But that option is not available on the iPad and may or may not be possible, depending on how much printer control can be exercised through AirPrint. It would be helpful to be able to print with manual duplexing (print even pages then reload paper and print odd pages). Neither of my printers offers automatic duplexing.

Could anyone with more knowledge in this area comment on whether this kind of application might be possible? I recently retired after many years as a software developer, but I have never written Mac software and I certainly know nothing about the internals of Airprint. A little software layer (maybe even just Applescript) to give a modest amount of control over print quality. Given that Airprint Activator is a really tiny application that appears to just tie together features already in the OS, I started wondering if in fact it might be possible to provide some printer control by creating Airprint "printers" on the Mac that force particular print quality features for example HP Draft Printer. No way to do duplexing, either manual or automatic (if your printer has it). No way to select draft mode, or to print a document in greyscale to avoid using up colour ink or toner. So my Epson photo printer is now also available from the iPad.Īirprint is easy to use.

Seems to be a fine machine, and once I downloaded a firmware update it showed up on my wife's iPad.Īnd just now I discovered a great little Mac application Airprint Activator (free, donation requested) that makes any printer shared by the Mac visible as an airprint printer, provided that the Mac is running and the user who shared the printer is logged in. Just got a new HP Laserjet Pro CM1415fnw colour laser all in one, at a great sale price.
